Sea Life Goes on at This Aquarium
The Opportunity
Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, New York, brings aquatic adventures to thousands of visitors a year, along with many interactive hands-on programs that educate the public about protecting local waters and the importance of environmental conservation.
In addition to following CDC guidelines with regard to COVID-19—including reduced guest capacity, increased cleaning and sanitation, and requiring masks of all employees and adult visitors—the aquarium wanted to take extra steps to provide continuous air disinfection in heavily trafficked areas.
“Deep cleaning can kill surface bacteria, but to attack viruses that linger in the air, we needed something different.”- Bryan DeLuca, Executive Director, Long Island Aquarium
The Solution
Bryan DeLuca, executive director for the popular marine park, found his answer in Current’s 365DisInFx™ LPU Series device that delivers germicidal ultraviolet (UVC) light, helping to target the inactivation of aerosolized viruses like seasonal coronaviruses and influenza in a typical room application.*
LPU is a novel UVC-LED emitter that is similar in appearance to a standard smoke detector, allowing for easy configuration of multiple devices as needed in occupied spaces of varying sizes, with ceiling mounting heights from 8.5 to 11 feet. A single unit provides an effective coverage area of approximately 50 square feet.
Why Current
Keeping entrances clean is a priority for the aquarium, and LPU was the simple, inobtrusive solution DeLuca was searching for. Several devices were mounted in the foyer of the park’s main entryway to provide constant air disinfection as visitors come and go. As an additional layer of protection, LPU complements other measures to mitigate germs, including the frequent cleaning of high-touch surfaces like door handles, as well as making antibacterial hand wipes available to guests.
“Current’s technology is a perfect fit for our multitiered approach to indoor disinfection,” says DeLuca.
The Results
While snorkel sessions wait to resume, Long Island Aquarium is still capturing imaginations and connecting guests to the magic of marine life with a helping hand from Current and UV solutions for occupied spaces.
