Cast Nylons Ltd. Helps Protect Its Employees With UVC Disinfection Devices

The Opportunity

Cast Nylons Limited is a premier producer of cast nylon in North America and sells cast nylon stock shapes and custom cast parts through an international network of distributors. When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, Cast Nylons looked for ways to protect its nearly 100 employees as well as it possibly could.

“We took an aggressive approach to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a safe environment for our employees,” says Steve Briggs, Cast Nylons’ president. “There is nothing more important to us than keeping our employees safe, and we were going to explore all options to make that happen.” Cast Nylons had recently installed UVA lighting from Current in some bathrooms and instituted protocols that included social distancing, mask wearing and consistent sanitizing of all work areas, but the company wanted to do more. That’s when Briggs heard about Current’s LED UVC disinfection lighting solutions as another potential safeguard for building occupants.

The Solution

When used as directed, Current’s LPU devices—featuring 365DisInFx™ UVC technology—provide 99% inactivation with fewer than six hours of exposure for seasonal coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that is known to cause COVID-19 (results based on testing using a bacteriophage MS2 model). Briggs says he was impressed by the confirmed safety reviews the products received and that Current was able to validate its results and the effectiveness of the system.

Based on that information, Briggs and his team decided to purchase more than 20 units across four buildings to install in high-traffic areas like the cafeteria, offices and bathrooms. He added that the installation process was straightforward for an electrician and remained inobtrusive for employees.

“It’s a completely benign application,” Briggs says. “When our people discovered what we were doing, they told us how much they appreciated the investment in the safety of their workplace.”

"When it came time to execute the plan to use disinfecting lighting, working with Current was a no-brainer.”

Why Current

As a leading company in its own field, the team at Cast Nylons only wanted to work with best-in-class partners when it came to providing for the safety of their employees. Based on their own personal understanding of how Current operates and its own commitments to quality, joining forces with the lighting innovator was the obvious choice.

“We’re well aware of Current’s ability to deliver on what they say they are going to deliver since we’ve partnered with them before on other projects,” Briggs says. “When it came time to execute the plan to use disinfecting lighting, working with Current was a no-brainer.”

The Results

Briggs says Cast Nylons’ efforts to care for its employees with UVC LED lighting have not gone unnoticed. In addition to the internal praise received, the project also received recognition from Cast Nylons’ local community and from the State of Ohio as well.

“In 2021, Cast Nylons received the Willoughby-area Chamber of Commerce Healthy Environment Award, mainly due our response to COVID-19 and specifically implementing technology where we can be helpful in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. That includes the Current UVC disinfecting pucks. We think it’s a fantastic technology,” says Kevin Mulligan, Cast Nylons’ senior project engineer + safety, health and environmental manager.

“It reinforced that our decision to go with Current’s LPU solution was the right one for us and for our employees,” Briggs says. “We were excited to be able to take these steps to make our employees feel more at ease when they’re in the offices.”
